Trios for flute, cello and piano "Episodes", op. 4

These trios for flute, cello and piano are an original work, since they are three independent trios that form a whole piece, like a cycle from which one could extract a part.

A first version of this work was composed between 2010 and 2011. It is an early work, written when Romain Corbisier was a student at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. Originally, the three trios were subtitled “Epic Adventures in three acts”, and linked by a narrative.

15 years later, Romain Corbisier has undertaken a complete revision of this early work (a daunting task given the evolution of the composer's language): while the three-trio structure has been retained, the musical content has been completely revised (while retaining the musical ideas originally composed), and the title changed. The three trios are organized into “episodes” (which becomes the subtitle):

  • Trio n°1 for flute, cello and piano “Initiation”, op. 4/1
  • Trio n°2 for flute, cello and piano “Voyages/Discoveries”, op. 4/2
  • Trio n°3 for flute, cello and piano “Renaissance”, op. 4/3

And even if they are not intended to tell a precise story, playing these trios consecutively in concert is part of an experience that reveals the true nature of the work, its deeper meaning. Nevertheless, each Trio has an autonomous structure that allows it to be played on its own in concert.

Even though this is chamber music, the treatment of the three instruments aims to create an orchestral impression, drawing great musical frescoes. Listening to this score is like taking a journey through the rich sound combinations of flute, cello and piano.
